Is it too soon for this blog to have traditions? Well imaginary reader, since you don’t even exist, I say there can be traditions. And in a break with said traditions Adventures in Pixels is technically (i.e. really) not a game soundtrack, but it’s simply too charming not to give an honourable mention.
It’s like Ben Landis just took my childhood and put a soundtrack to it. In twenty tracks it evokes so many memories, brings to mind so many games. From the irrepressibly cheerful opening tracks to the argh-spiders-and-darkness later on, and the joyful closing tracks, Adventures in Pixels covers about every game I loved growing up.
Oddly enough, one of those games is one I haven’t so much as thought about in years. Decades perhaps. The NewZealand Story. Honestly, I couldn’t tell you why. I don’t even know if the Spectrum version had a soundtrack, but nevertheless, I’m left with that wonderful, insane game in my mind, a burning desire to play it again, and my stomach twisting with memories so fond it’s almost painful. The NewZealand Story.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to sit here with “Chickens (going ‘peck peck peck’)” on repeat until my stomach unties itself.
Oh my, it does have a soundtrack and it’s awesome…
