Game music: The Binding of Isaac

Binding of Isaac OST CoverTwo Danny Baranowsky albums in a row? Why not? This week, music from the thoroughly disturbing and depressing roguelike The Binding of Isaac.

If there’s any game music that sounds even vaguely like The Binding of Isaac I can’t name it. The theme is haunting, mournful, and utterly emotive; the album as a whole moves slowly from haunting to panicked, then angry and eventually back to the haunting main theme but this time with some backbone to it. After tracking the journey of a frightened young boy, the album gets weird. Once the opening track has been reprised, we’re treated to a wonderful club remix of the main theme by none other than Big Giant Circles, a few more tracks, and then the closing “My Innermost Apocalypse” which wouldn’t have been out of place in the original Doom soundtrack.

This album weaves together so many styles there’s more or less something for everyone. And it can be yours for less than the cost of a cup of tea. Go on. Traumatise yourself.
